WK1 D5 A2 - 'Living On The Edge'

Living On The Edge

A Letter From The Tundra

Dear Mum,
I would like to start off by saying that there are no trees in the Tundra, but its a very dry piece of land. It's a bit cold here too, so I had to make sure I was wearing something warm. We have eaten and explored this strange place. Continuing, we are lucky that the weather has changed through the years. I think that the Tundra has been pretty interesting so far. I would love to go to the Tundra again. I wish I had taken a camera so I could take pictures of this interesting piece of land. I hope to go here again someday.

WK1 D5 A1 - 'Towering Timbers'

Towering Timbers

Logging

So, loggers. People who cut down trees so they can use the wood for things.
First off, why would you ruin a forest?! I know it's for houses and that, but I think if you are going to chop down a bunch a trees in a beautiful NZ forest, then go watch the Lorax..! (Pretty good movie.)
Second, THE ANIMALS! THE POOR ANIMALS!

Reasons to support my argument:
  1. Have you seen the native NZ Forests? I think many people would love to see them and let the trees grow more and more. It's not that fair to cut it down, and I know houses are important, but I mean, let it grow.
  2. Going back to THE POOR ANIMALS. So the animals that live in trees, like birds, will be kicked out of their homes so we can have our homes.
  3. The environment. I think the loggers are damaging our environment.
Need I say more?

Anyways, have a nice day. Enjoy your New Year, eat waffles, and relax in a hotel room.

WK1 D4 A3 - 'Salt and Pepper'

This is my hotel. I would build it in Paris, maybe a bit close to the Eiffel Tower because the tourists would be staying at my hotel, and they would get to get a photo by the Eiffel Tower, too. This is one of the rooms:

Leave a comment if you want and have a nice day.

WK1 D4 A2 - 'Pancakes and Maple Syrup?'

Pancakes and Maple Syrup?

My Favourite Food

My favourite food would have to be waffles. (Usually Chocolate Chip.)

How to make Waffles:
You can save your time by buying them at the store and microwaving or toasting them. But if your thinking, 'I'm so lazy, I should totally make some waffles, because I'm a bit too broke to buy them at the-' Forget what I said, let's move on, just make some waffles because you want to.
  1. In a large bowl, mix together some flour, salt, baking powder, and sugar. Set it aside and preheat your waffle iron to whatever temperature you want.
  2. Next, in a different bowl, beat the eggs. Stir some milk, butter and vanilla in. Then pour the milk mixture into the flour mixture, and beat it until blended.
  3. Ladle your batter into the preheated waffle iron. Then cook the waffles until its golden and crisp. Then serve the waffles immediately. (Because your starving, duh. No, not actually, just follow my instructions.)

WK1 D4 A1 - 'Scaling New Heights'

Scaling New Heights

Sir Edmund Hillary

If I met Sir Edmund Hillary and got to interview him, these are five questions I would ask him.

  1. Have you always wanted to climb mountains?
  2. Did you always think climbing mountains looked easy?
  3. Would climbing a tall mountain be your biggest achievement so far?
  4. Have you ever been afraid of heights?
  5. Do you enjoy climbing mountains?

WK1 D3 A3 - 'The WWF - World Wildlife Fund'

The WWF

World Wildlife Fund

The WWF Panda logo doesn't mean the Panda is the main animal they are saving. The WWF is actually saving many animals such as Tigers, Polar Bears, Giant Pandas, Sea Turtles, Seals, Elephants, Rhinos, Whales, and even Gorillas. You can actually adopt a fluffy Panda toy to help save them. Amazing, right? I'll be talking about the Tigers.

(I got a bit confused on this activity, so I just decided to choose one animal they are saving.)

What is the WWF doing to help the Tigers?
The WWF is helping protect their habitat because they need lots of space to roam around, and it will help the other endangered animals there, too. To protect one tiger, they need to conserve around 25,000 acres of forest. The Tigers help us have a healthy ecosystem, so saving tigers would help us. They are also helping around at Thirty Hills, one of the last places on Earth where elephants, tigers, and orangutans coexist in the wild!

What success have they had protecting the Tiger?
The WWF has been capturing photos and videos of the Tigers, so they can keep track of how many there are and such. Don't worry, it isn't harming the wildlife. The WWF is currently clearing more space for the tigers. You can what they are working on here.

Hi, Merry Christmas to all of you guys, I hope you enjoy your day. For this activity I had to find an animal they were working on helping, and then what they are doing to help them, and to finish it off, the success they have had protecting it. This activity took very long. Not surprising, I guess.
Anyway, I hope you leave a comment!

SLJ WK1 D3 A2 - 'The Secretive Skink'

Pro's And Cons

If I were a DOC Ranger

Pro's:
  1. You get to be with animals
  2. Your helping plants and animals, so your doing good things
  3. You get to stay on an island
Cons:
  1. You will be away from your family on the island
  2. It's a lot of work
  3. It might be annoying hearing the sound of the animals outside

SLJ WK1 A2 D2 - 'Fabulous Ferns'

Fabulous Ferns

For this activity, I'm naming 3 sports teams that have the word 'Fern' in them. I also have the uniforms with them too, as you can see.

Silver Ferns. (Netball Team)
Uniform:
Image result for silver ferns uniform
(Credit to the Silver Ferns Website, where I found the image)

Black Ferns. (Womens Rugby Union)
Uniform:
Image result for black ferns uniform
(Credit to the All Blacks Website)

Football Ferns. (Womens Football)
Uniform:

(Credit to the Newshub Website. It has the proper credits there in case I am wrong)

My favorite uniform out of these, then I would choose Black Ferns, then the Silver Ferns, then the Football Ferns. I like the Black Ferns uniform because it looks more comfortable and casual than the others. I'd certainly wear it if it was in my closet, though. Have a nice day!

SLJ WK1 D2 A1 - 'Giants Among Us'

Giants Among Us

If I had the chance to visit Tane Mahuta, I would.
I know I'm lazy most of the time, but if I had been given the chance I would go. (I mean, depends on my mood sometimes.) But seeing a special tree in real life would be so amazing. You could take photo's if you like. I would enjoy actually leaving my house for once and going somewhere like that. I don't know about you, but I would enjoy that all the way.
Maybe I'd get hungry, tired, or thirsty at one point, but I mean, pfft, thats normal for me.

For this activity we had to write about if we wanted to go visit Tane Mahuta, and why or why not. I hope you leave a comment. Have a really nice day!

SLJ WK1 A1 D3 - 'Fantastic Beasts'

I had to create a beast, including a description about it. I had to write what it felt like, smelled like, ate, and looked like. I hope you like it. Leave a comment if you want.
Have a nice day!

SLJ WK1 A2 - 'North and South'

Auckland

My Hometown.

My hometown is Auckland. Auckland is special because I grew up there, and I have many memories in Auckland. Auckland is an amazing place to live because you have the wonderful beaming sun, a soft breeze passing by, and the sand at your toes. I feel lucky to call Auckland my hometown because there are beautiful sights, such as waterfalls, waterways, and lovely places to eat too. There are art galleries, restaurants, and cafes. These might not be around every corner, but you can still visit each of those, and enjoy your time there. Auckland might not be a perfect city, but it's lovely and I think as I was growing up, it had always been like that.

SLJ WK1 A1 - 'The Legend of New Zealand'

Three Fun Facts about NZ!

  1. New Zealand has no snakes! (Thank god)
  2. There have been several movies filmed in the country. The most popular ones are 'Once were Warriors,' 'The Whale Rider,' 'The Piano' and of course, 'Lord Of The Rings.'
  3. 30% of the entire country is made up of forest.
This was the first activity, which I probably should've posted first, ahem, anyway... This is three fun facts about NZ, as you can see. We had to look at a list of facts about NZ, and then choose our top 3. After that, we had to write our top 3 in our own words. Leave a comment, and have a nice day.

SLJ - W1, A3 - 'Ice, Ice, Baby'

A bit late, but anyways, this is my digital footprint I made. It includes what you should post, what you shouldn't post, and some ideas. I hope you learned something. Beware of what you post online!
Good luck to those who are doing the Summer Learning Journey for this year!

SLJ - Paying It Forward

Paying It Forward

We had to write what we would give families if we could go back to the 1930's. Here is what I wrote.

If I could visit a family in the 1930's, I would give them clothes, food (such as chocolate, gummy worms, etc), money, a few healthy foods, and maybe a laptop, a phone, and of course a set-up WiFi Modem. What's the point of having a device without WiFi? Maybe some board games, too. I would definitely help these families if I could. But I'm glad Its not the 1930's. (If it was, I still wouldn't be able to give them anything.)

How do Trees affect Animals? (LCS)

For LCS, we all got into groups and chose a topic for Trees. Our group chose 'How do Trees affect Animals?' Each group had to research and make a Flowchart on what we chose to do. I did my research and my Flowchart with Ana and Charlotte. I enjoyed doing this and I think ours worked out very well, considering we had about 2 days to finish the Task. Remember to keep our Trees safe!

Cup Temperature - Experiment

Questions:

Which cup insulated the best?   I think the Tinfoil cup worked the best.
Which cup worked the worst?    I think that the normal cup had worked the worst.

Which cup is best to hold a hot drink in? I would use the tinfoil cup because if it's newspaper, the paper could get wet and you might need to cool it down.

This is my line graph I did for my Cup Temperature experiment. We had 3 cups, one covered with tinfoil, one covered with newspaper, and one normal cup. Every 3 minutes we had to check the temperature, and see which cup cooled the fastest. We also made up some questions as you can see above.

Makey Makey - Report Template

Diagram Makey Makey:

Purpose: To inform. Audience: Senior School and people who are

interested in STEAM/Science Clubs.

RT:  - Start with a TITLE - Use keywords -

  • Makey Makey
  • Circuit
  • Wires
  • Earth clips
  • Alligator clips
Makey Makey

What is a Makey Makey?
A makey makey is a circuit that comes with about 8 or 10 alligator clips and
you clip the alligator clips into the ‘On Arrow’ or ‘On Space/click’ or earth clip.

How do you programme it?
You mainly use scratch to programme it. You can use sounds, movement or
other things.

What do you need to use it?
You need to use the alligator clips to clip in (obviously) you need one
chromebook for Scratch, and you also need the circuit and the knowledge to
know what your doing.

Do the wires do different things?
No, they all do the same thing, they just come in different colours.

This is the template for the report that I'm writing about Makey Makey circuits.

39 Steps (Chapter Summary)

39 Steps

Chapter Summary

Chapter 1: I think the book immediately hooked me in a the start since I
(surprisingly) saw a dead body. Franklin and Richard` talked about the “Black
Stone,” a group planning to kill Mr. Karolides. Franklin Scudder knew the Black
Stone was after him. Later, Richard decided to go to sleep early, and that’s when
he woke up and saw the dead body of  Franklin Scudder.

Chapter 2: He knew that the Black Stone had killed him, and he also knew that
his apartment wasn’t safe. He went to the  bread bin to grab some bread, and
noticed his notebook was there, and felt more happy. After he escaped the
apartment, he went to the Milkman and asked for his outfit and went to the
Train Station and left.

Chapter 3: Riding on the train safely away from police, he read the notebook and
didn’t quite understand. To him, the words were pretty meaningless. Soon he
changed trains and arrived at a station at night. He ended up sleeping on a patch
of grass, hidden with the plants.

Chapter 4: Richard got bitten by a “cross-eyed dog” as he left another train, he
started running through the moorland again. A plane flew by, looking for Richard,
so Richard hid in some plants. Then he found a car with the keys in the ignition
parked perfectly, so Richard drove the car away from the plane through a forest.

Chapter 5: Richard Hannay was driving, until there was a twist in the road that
Richard drove over, and crashed down into a forest. He climbed up and found a
bike, which he used and carried on. The plane spotted Richard once again, so
Richard dumped the bike in the bush, and started running on his feet. A few cars
had spotted him, and ran over, so Richard picked up a hammer and took off his
jacket and rubbed dirt all over himself so he looked like he had been working on the
roads.

Chapter 6: At night, he slept in the grass once again, but in the morning he was
seen by a couple of policemen and started running towards a house. A man told
him to come inside, but the man knew him. The man had a security guard with a
revolver, that followed Richard’s every move. Accidentally, he knocked over
candles on his papers and the house was soon on fire. The revolver fired, but by
that time Richard already escaped.

Chapter 7: Richard hid on top of a old birdhouse, but soon when it was clear he
ran off. He made his way to a train station again, and hopped on.  After a few train
rides, he saw a bridge with a man standing on it. The man knew Richard, too. He
was Sir Walter Bullivant, the man Richard was searching for. They went to Sir
Walter’s home, and found out that Mr Karolides was dead an hour ago.

Chapter 8: Sir Walter and Richard talked about ‘The Black Stone’ and hopped in
a car where they drove and drove away. Sir Walter went to the chief constable and
the body was cleared out of the apartment, and the chief constable believed
Richard. The “First Sea Lord” came out, and Richard knew that the Sea Lord knew
him. He was working for the Black Stone, and now he knew all their plans.

Chapter 9: The impostor was already gone by now, so Richard and Sir Walter
talked for a while. Then Richard left to the beach, until they saw a villa with 39
steps down to the beach. He went inside, and there was two men eating dinner.
Richard tried to arrest them, until they fired a gun at him and threw candlesticks.
The front door burst open and Police came inside to arrest the Black Stone. Two
Weeks after when the War broke out, Richard joined the army. He felt prepared
and proud of himself.

The End

I had to create a Chapter summary for my book of 39 Steps, a book I'm reading in my reading group. I had to write down a summary after I read each chapter in a small paragraph. That's all.

Travelling Mysteries (Free Writing)

Travelling Mysteries

The bell rang. A huge group of kids ran outside. Most of them ran, but some walked, or waited for their parents to get there. One girl went the opposite way. One way nobody was going, but stuck inside a ocean of kids, she blended in pretty well. She went inside the bathroom. She waited in front of the sink, until her watch beeped, and the numbers on the watch flashed. “Perfect timing.” She said, tapping her watch. A small hologram appeared. “Same for you, Lily.” The hologram spoke. “Anyways, come to the headquarters fast.” The hologram said. “This is going to be one of your favourites.” The hologram flashed, and disappeared. Her watch went back to normal. ‘One of my favourites?’ Lily thought. She shrugged, and ran off. There weren’t as much kids now. She was half-way there. Suddenly her phone rang. “Hello?” She answered. “Your late to get home again!” The person on the other end was her mother. “Sorry, spending a night at a friends house. For studying, of course.” Lily replied. “Fine, but this is the last time.” Her mother ended the call, and Lily continued to walk.

She had finally got there. She was at the beach. There was a large rock that was always there. Lily places her hand on the side of the rock. BEEP, BEEP. Lily looked around. Nobody ever came to this beach. The hologram made sure of that. Actually, she was the one who decided to spread rumours about it. She actually fooled them, so they think it’s true. Anyways, out of the water, A building came out. A path appears. Lily walks on it. She makes her way inside. And the building disappeared. The hologram lady walked out. Not a hologram, but the real person. “Alright, come, in you go. Same as last time.” The lady looked like she was rushing. Lily was shoved inside this glass tube. Anyways, the lady went behind some controls. She pulled a small lever. ZAP! Lily disappeared before she could say a single word.

Lily appeared in a small room. It looked like a janitor’s closet. She examined the room, looking at what was around her. She noticed that she was holding a piece of paper. At the top was a title that said, ‘Your Job Is:’ and underneath that was a list of the things she needed to do. “Alright, so… Step one, earn their trust. Step two, sneak in without being spotted. And lastly, step three, steal the jewel.” Lily read. “Just like those cartoons I used to watch.” Lily shakes her head to clear all the cartoons out of her head. “Wait, I’m supposed to be wearing my black spy suit.” Lily said, looking down at her gown. “What the heck is this?! I’m calling her again…” Lily, still annoyed, tapped her watch. The hologram appeared again. “Tell me what's going on here.” Lily demanded. “Sorry, but I’m really busy right now.” The hologram said. Then it disappeared, as always.

Lily rolled her eyes. She took some time to look at what she wore. She was wearing a long, bright pink gown, with patterns on the sides. She had long light pink gloves on her hands to match the dress. And she was wearing a mask, too. She removed the mask to examine it. The mask had pink glitter on it, and black glitter on the edges. “Wait a minute..” Lily had a idea of what she was doing. “I’m at a masquerade party! Nice!” Lily smiled, and twirled with her dress. “I look amazing. At least they gave me something good to wear.” She placed the mask back on her face. She walked towards the door. She felt lucky that she was wearing flats instead of high heels. Anyways, she opened the door and walked out, closing the door again. She saw a giant room, which she soon realized was a ballroom. It was beautiful and full of people.

Lily casually made her way over to a door. It was a huge, wooden door with patterns of flowers around the edges. Lily stood in front of it. She observed, looking at all the patterns. “This must be the door that leads you inside and out.” Lily whispered to herself. “What did you say?” Said a large, armoured figure. It stood by the side of the door, now it was looking down at Lily. Lily realised that was a guard. It was holding a silver axe, which looked very heavy. “Oh, um, I was, uh,  just admiring.” Lily said, with a nervous looking smile taped across her face. “If you say so.” The guard looked forward again and continued to well… Guard, I guess. Lily quickly looked at the door handle. It was large, and it had a giant lock on it. Then she turned and walked to the corner of the room. She stood there and thought. “I’ve got to find some sort of key. A large, heavy, key.”

Lily looked at the axe once more, realizing that was the key, by looking at the sharp ends. Lily decided to distract the guard. So she grabbed a cup full of a red liquid. ‘3, 2, 1...Go!’ As soon as Lily finished thinking, she poured the liquid onto the guard. Well she kind of threw the cup in the air. The liquid flowed into the helmet, hopefully getting in his eyes. “What is this- Hey, you get back here! I can’t see!” The guard said walking around crashing into things. People laughed as he kept hitting things. Then he fell, dropping his axe. ‘Let’s do this thing.’ Lily ran and grabbed the axe. She struggled to, but eventually she had it. The other guards ran out, feeling a bit afraid since they were unarmed. Lily came a little closer. “I will hit you with this axe, so stay back!” Lily spoke, feeling fearless. The guards stepped back. One tripped over a lady’s high heels. Both the lady and the guard went down. “Are you okay-” The guard tripped on the fallen guards legs, going down with them too. There was a loud clank with that many layers of armour on. Lily grinned and slowly lifted the axe up and pushed it into the lock. The door opened. “HEY! She’s getting away!” A Guard shouted. They all ran, while Lily escaped and shut the door. “You better get back here THIS INSTANT!” Lily heard.

“Now to find this ‘Secret Room’ of rare jewels.” Lily laughed at her very own sentence. She looked around. Then there was a loud bang. “Hope she didn’t run too far.” A Guard spoke. “Oh no.” Lily ran and leaned on the side of the wall. There was a brick poking out that she leaned on. It was pushed in easily. Then a secret door opened. “Huh? I found it!” Lily said happily. “I think..” It was dark, but torches lit the way. Lily made her way through the hallway, until she found a dead end. “It stops here.” Lily said, turning about to tread off. Then she realized, “That’s only what they want us to think.” Lily tried finding a secret button, or a secret lever, or anything that would open the wall. Nothing. After all her searching, nothing at all. Lily sighed. “Maybe it's more simple than I thought.” Lily decided standing right in front of the wall that seemed to be the dead end. She tapped the wall, and surprisingly it opened. “Huh, I guess I was right.” Lily ran in and it shined beautifully. There were rare jewels and jewelry everywhere. “How do I know which one to take?” Lily thought. Someone jumped down from a tall shelf. “I suggest ya’ don’t.” He was much older, and he didn’t have much armour, but Lily was sure to lose a fight to him. Lily sneaked a quick look at the paper, and it said the gem was a dark shade of red, and it was medium sized, and it was light. Lily spotted a maroon medium gem, which she ran at and grabbed. “You’ll never catch me!” Lily shouted. She dived into a vent. The man was way too big to fit inside. Lily giggled and crawled her way to the end. She tapped her watch again, and there the hologram was. “I’m ready to go back.” Lily said. And 3… 3… 1… WHOOSH! And in seconds she was back in the headquarters. “What was the rush before you sent me?” Lily asked. “I was busy, very busy, and I was about to be late for something, so I had to hurry. Now go back home, your mother’s probably worried. She made her way home and had a nap, tired after all that mess.

Comparing Population

For maths I made a graph. This graph compares the population of Australia, Japan and the UK. If you hover your mouse over each of the bars, it will tell you the exact population.
