Whai (String Games)
Whai is a string game that Maori children used to play long ago. You grab a piece of string and the aim of the game is to make the most elegant pattern with the string. It was more of flax than string. There are no rules to play the game.
Whai is old, but it could still be played today.
Kia Ora Tara,
ReplyDeleteWell done on finding out about a game that Māori children used to play. I've never heard of Whai before, so it's great to learn something new! It sounds as though Māori children were quite resourceful; making games out of string.
I remember playing Tī Rākau in school, only instead of using wooden rods we used old magazines that we rolled up in to rod-shaped instruments. Tī Rākau was hard because I was often distracted trying to sing along as well as throw and catch the rods!
Whai sounds pretty flexible without rules; can you tell me why there weren't any rules to the game?
Cheers,
Jordan
