Art Deco

Art Deco was started in 1920. If I could rate this painting from 1 to 5, I would give it a 5. The reason I am giving it a 5 is because I think it's a really nice painting and it's really detailed. It looks like the car is real. Tamara did really well with her self portrait, I wish I could paint like that.

  1. Mōrena Tara,

You really have picked up quite a bit of momentum now haven't you? I'd have to agree with you and commend you for your rating of 5/5. I like how you point out the detail on the car; it really is amazing and looks as though Lempicka only used a few colours to achieve that detail.
I'm curious as to why you think this may be a self-portrait?

I appreciate that you've told your reader when Art Deco itself first started.
Did you know that Napier is known to be the Art Deco capital of New Zealand? This is because in 1931, after they had a devastatingly huge earthquake, they had to rebuild. Meanwhile, all of the Architects graduating from University had been studying the Art Deco movement, so that's what they ended up specialising in. They all went to work on redesigning and rebuilding in Napier.

Do you enjoy art? What's your favourite form of art?

    Cheers,

    Jordan.

    1. Hi Jordan!

I think it's a self portrait because she drew herself in the car. I mean, you don't really have to draw yourself sitting on a wooden chair to make the picture a self portrait, right? Wow, I never knew Napier is the Art Deco capital of NZ. I never even knew a city could be a art deco capital. I do enjoy art, very much. My favourite form of art is drawing. I also like drawing digitally but it's a bit hard.

    2. Mōrena Tara,

I really do look forward to your lovely comments. I love your rebuttal to my question; you're quite the young philosopher!
I'm glad to hear that you love drawing— I too love to draw! I'm trying to draw digitally at the moment and it's much trickier than just using a pencil, isn't it? I've invested in a wireless mouse for my laptop; I'm hoping this will improve my drawing.

  2. Hi Tara!

Another SLJ activity complete! Ka pai! I agree, it is a beautiful painting! What do you think about the lady driving the car? I wonder where she is going… What are your thoughts?

    Keep up the great work!

    1. Hello Cadence.

I think she is driving on a bridge with a wonderful sunset around her. She might be going to somewhere she can relax. I will keep up my great work!
