Maths WK5 T4

Emily and I did a lot of work on latitude and longitude. It was fun learning about it! The worksheets seemed hard at first but once I found out how to do it, it was much easier.

Reading WK5 T4

For this week's reading Emily and I wrote a debate about whether or not we should have a gaming curfew. It was fun reading all of the different texts about gaming and searching the negative consequences.

Guy Fawkes Description

Excitement filled the audience as bright, loud, fireworks burst
into the air. BOOM! Excited and pleased cheers filled the
neighborhood. CRACKLE! The fireworks sink down, little
sparks hitting the grass. People clap and lean towards the
person beside them, chattering about the wonderful sight.
More are lit and they explode into the night sky, the stars
glistening. Eyes lit up as more fireworks fired off into
the skies. BANG! Startled citizens back up in shock.
FIZZ! It sprinkled back down, some flares spreading
across the grass, fading away. Many yells filled the
air, questions following them. “Is it over yet?” A few
questioned. Sparklers were given out, the sparks
bouncing away. Children stared at the sparklers
intently, slightly tempted to touch it. The adults
warn them with a serious tone in their
voice. Some shivered in the chilly weather,
hugging themselves tighter. The luminous stars
dance in the moonlit sky. Some people hold a hand
to their ears. BOOM! BANG! Sudden fireworks
burst off. The invisible, fluffy clouds shuffle along.
The younger children yelp and hide behind their
parents, wincing at the sound. Those who feared
the loud noise show their smiles when they think it’s over.

They jump, startled by another shooting off into the
sky and ending with a BANG! The youngest children
tug on the sleeves of their parents. Some walk off,
heading back home as a cold breeze shot by. Another
darted into the night sky, sparks bursting off in
different directions. A shooting-star-like firework
followed behind it, very quick and making a loud,
squealing noise. It then faded away, as they all do,
applause exploding into the cold air. Grey smoke
clouded the air. It surrounds the audience, the smell
unpleasant. Everyone scrunches up their noses,
waving the smell away. People begin to leave as
the sky darkens. That was Guy Fawkes.

Reading WK4 T4

I had to read a lot about Guy Fawkes. I learned a lot of things I never knew before! I did my reading tasks with Emily this week.

Maths WK4 T4

I did my Math's with Emily this week. We finished on Wednesday.

Auckland Fire

I opened my eyes to hear crackling. The crackling from a fire.
The scorching fire burned, my eyes darting to the smoke as it clouded the air.
I sweat in the sweltering heat. The families start to feel fear.
They were worried about what would happen. Hopefully nobody else was here.
I see nothing but flames surround me. The firetrucks rolled in, sirens wailing.
Relieved bystanders cheer. The firefighters seem to ignore the cheers,
grabbing a hose and showering the fire with water. Black smoke,
an unusual color for smoke, filled the air. Innocent bystanders cough
and back away from the building, heading back to their vehicles.
My heart raced. Through flames I see water. Suddenly there was hope.

There were crackling flames and yelping citizens.
The smell of the fire was strong and smoking,
similar to burning plastic. I scrunch my nose at the smell.
I see another person standing not too far away.
They were almost completely surrounded by boiling
flames. I was unable to help, hoping a firefighter would
soon arrive and save them. I race to the edge of the rooftop
once there’s enough space to run. I wait for a ladder to reach up.
I look back at the other citizens, hoping they’d get saved too.
I see a ladder extend towards me. I breathe a sigh of relief.
“Thank god,” I muttered. A firefighter is attached to the ladder,
holding on tight. Once he reached the top, he hops onto the rooftop
and commands everyone to climb down. It was so high up but it was
the only way. I go first, placing my feet on the ladder and gripping
the sides tightly. As I am climbing down the ladder, it lowered unexpectedly.
I shrugged and held on until I reached the ground. I hop off the ladder.

Finally, relief. I was asked if I was okay.
I replied telling them that I wasn’t injured at all,
which was very fortunate. I took one last glance at the
rooftop and hoped everyone else would be alright.
I had a few questions that I decided to keep to myself.
Questions like ‘How did I get here? How did the fire start?
Where’s my family? Where am I?’ They were all left unanswered.
For now, at least. I see black smoke emitted from the fire.
I try to get as far away as I need to be, I was warned and told
to stay back. I looked around desperately, searching for my family.
Searching for answers. I had walked too far that I began to get lost.
Where was I even going? My hope suddenly faded and panic replaced it.
My mind was clouded with ‘oh nos’ and ‘what if’s.’ I had to search for
my family, slightly distracted by the black smoke, thinking that I
should’ve asked for help. It was too late now, I was already lost
and I had nobody to run to. All I could do was sit on the concrete
and look around hopelessly.

I frowned. Nowhere to go, no one to go to, and no food.
Was I hopeless? Yes, completely. Was I going to try flip
things around? Absolutely not. I knew that night would soon
arrive so I’d have to get going soon. But where to go? There
was nowhere to go that would be helpful and I didn’t know
where my car was. Did I even arrive in a car? I’m not even sure,
I could’ve used a bike, a skateboard or I could’ve just walked.
Why was I asking myself this? It didn’t matter, what did matter was
home, the one place I am unable to get back to. I had to check in
at a hotel, it’s the city after all, there’s got to be a hotel somewhere.
I find a hotel and enter, quickly digging through my pockets first for
some money. I had enough to pay for tonight, tomorrow would be a
different story. I paid and unlocked my room with a key I was given,
the room number labelled on top. I flopped onto my bed and drift
to sleep. What now?

I opened my eyes. It felt extremely hot. Was the air conditioning on?
I don’t remember turning it on… I sit up and widen my eyes, sniffing
the air. The air smelled like burnt plastic and smoke. A familiar
crackling noise filled my ears. What I saw, though, I didn’t believe.
Hot, burning, fire.
“Well,” I chuckled nervously, “I’m doomed.”

The end

I was given an image and I had to write about it. I wrote a narrative, pretending I was in the fire. It was cool getting to write it!

Wearable Arts Poems

Wearable Arts is coming -
Every kid knows,
They’re all stomping around like dino's

Wearable Arts is coming -
The teachers know,
They clean up while preparing for the show

Wearable Arts is coming -
The parents know,
They’re taking a camera to take some photos

Wearable Arts is coming -
I know,
Hoping my mum decides not to go

Second Poem:

Wearable Arts is coming -
The backstage crew is preparing,
They’re waiting to see what the models are wearing

Wearable Arts is coming -
Everyone is creating,
Ready for the show, but tired of waiting

Wearable Arts is coming -
The teachers are tired,
Screaming like the world is on fire

Wearable Arts is coming -
I hope it works out,

I wonder what everyone is screaming about

I wrote two poems about Wearable Arts using the model, 'Winter's coming.' I enjoyed writing both of them and I'm excited for the real show. I can't wait!

Reading WK10 T2

My Reading for this week! We are performing a play. If you're a Harry Potter fan, me and my friend Samantha put a few references in the script which you can view. The two of us changed the script a little and we liked what we came up with!

STEAM Fair Planner

Me and my friend Emily did an art project for STEAM! STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, art and math. We had lots of fun doing the artwork and even received a distinction award!

Thank you Letter - Glow Show

To The Glow Show Company,
Thank you for letting our school attend your Matariki Glow
Show. It was a lovely experience for such a small price.
We’re very thankful that you lowered the price from $10
to just a gold coin. My favorite  would have to be the
beautiful butterfly puppet. It's smart to include holes
between the wings to fit your hands in so you can easily
flap the wings. It was also bright and pretty, I liked the
colors very much. Whoever made the puppets did a
lovely job on them. I also think that the singing was great.
After the show, we saw the four people who played the
characters on stage. It's surprising to think that only four
people played the characters, they even sang for
all of them!

If I had to choose a favorite character, it’d definitely
be the Taniwha. The Taniwha was a funny character.
My second favorite would have to be the satellite when
he was glitching everywhere in space. The show was
hilarious and you could barely see anybody unless you
looked close enough. It was as if the puppets were floating
by themselves. The cast was great too. Good thing there
were a ton of seats, I’d definitely feel bad if anyone had to
miss out on an experience like that. As soon as the
butterfly flew as the theater darkened, I knew that it
was going to be a great show.

I can’t really say that I disliked anything, especially the puppets!
You can easily tell that there’s been so much work put into it. It’s
nice that somebody put so much effort into the puppets. So to
end it off, I really enjoyed the show and I would love
to go see it again!

From Tara (Kauri Hub PCS)

How to be a School Leader!

Are you interested in becoming a School Leader? Then
pay close attention, I’ll be
teaching you how to be a great School
Leader at PCS.

First off, you have to be very respectful towards others. This
is because you talk to lots of people, even special guests that arrive
at the school for a Duffy Assembly, which you might be chosen to
introduce. Why does being respectful apply to this? Because you have
to be very kind as you are speaking to them, otherwise they might not feel
as welcome. Respect is an important quality you should already have
before you get chosen as a Leader. You also shouldn’t have an
annoyed tone as you speak to people either. You should also
make others feel welcome, such as new students or guests.

Next comes confidence. Confidence is very important. Back to the
“introducing guests” part, you have to be confident enough to speak
to them. And you also have to take on the job of having to host
whole school assemblies a few times. This also means having
to contribute as a School Leader. Accept other ideas that people
have, it's also okay to give feedback if you disagree. For
example, School Leaders can also organize fundraisers for
trips. When you are discussing fundraiser ideas, take in
other ideas and accept them, rather than not accepting
anything at all.

And then comes responsibility. Another important quality
for School Leaders. You have to be on time. For a few things,
maybe jobs. Speaking of time, you also should be
able to manage your time. Time is important, you should
be able to prioritise. Since school leaders get jobs, you
should try to put the important jobs first, and the least
important last. And you should be hard-working,
like getting work done instead of spending it doing
less important things like having a conversation with your buddy.
That’s what makes responsibility important.

Last comes being a learner. School Leaders should
be able to finish their work fast and go to a job. They
should still be able to learn stuff, and handle their jobs. It sounds
a little hard to learn and do jobs at the same time, but you should be
able to be hard-working. Being hard-working doesn’t mean you can
finish work immediately, not always do you have to finish it.
All you have to do is try and have fun. As the school motto
says, ‘We have fun learning.’

All of those qualities are important. They all add up to being
a great School Leader. Being a School Leader also applies
to your life in the future because all the information about
your schools go onto what's called a CV. On your CV it should
say that you're a school leader. That information is important,
because when you want to get hired for a job, whoever is
hiring you can look at your CV and know that you’d
be a great employee. That makes it easier for you to get a job.

Reading WK9 T2

My Reading for Week 9! We did a few research on MOTAT because week 9 was the week we had our MOTAT trips. It was really fun and we were checking out the website.
